Blackjack odds of winning can be high only if players fully understand the rules of the game and basic blackjack strategy, which means that players should understand the difference between playing soft hand and hard hand. The matter is that most of the beginners play using so called “basic blackjack chart”.

Blackjack Hand Signals. Check out the Vegas Blackjack Hand Signals in motion here! Badly used blackjack hand signals are a perfect way to lose big at the tables, so before you head to the casino, take careful note of the different black jack hand gestures used in the game to avoid running into problems. Well then, on average just how good a hand do you need to beat the dealer? Many aspiring students of the game have asked me, 'What's the dealer's average hand?' Of the three dozen blackjack books I have on my shelf, none of them contain this specific information per se, and there's a good reason for it.

The average value is
(17+18+19+20+21)/5 = 19
Something tells me, you meant to ask about the expected value, not the average.
To compute the average, you need to weigh the numbers by values from Wizard's Appendix 2.
For example, for 6 deck S17:
(0.152487 * 17 + 0.146201*18 + 0.14035*19 + 0.188478*20 + 0.076507*21)/0.704023 = 18.844205

SOMETHING tells me you didn't read 'dealers average final hand.'

I'd compare it to people saying 'The Patriots win their games by an average of 9 points..' Does that include the games they lost? Does it take points away in those cases? Probably the only way to have quasi-meaningful data would be to say, the dealer breaks X%, and in the (100 - X)% that the dealer doesn't break, the average final hand is Y.

Except when the dealer's hand is the only one left in play, are you counting that as not breaking?

If they stand there average hand is 17 because they are just staying with 17. if they hit there average hand is 18.5 because 18 or lower is normally a losing hand in blackjack on average and 19 or higher is usually a winning hand in blackjack. The dealer on any given hand will get a

You thought he needed help averaging five numbers? Are you saying the dealer's ending hands will be perfectly distributed with 17,18,19,20,21? If the dealer hasn't played a number of hands that is a multiple of 5, then that's impossible. What is a blackjack hard total

You thought he needed help averaging five numbers?

No, I just pointed out that he asked a wrong question.
Quote:

Are you saying the dealer's ending hands will be perfectly distributed with 17,18,19,20,21?

Not sure what what 'perfectly distributed' means in this context.
Perhaps, you meant to ask if I thought it would be uniformly or evenly distributed? In that case, the answer is no, I don't think that, which, I thought, was made clear enough by my referencing Wizard's page with the actual probabilities of each hand.
'When two people always agree one of them is unnecessary'

OK, but I understood his meaning and thought he asked exactly the right question. I don't know the precise definition of even distribution. What did you think perfectly might mean other than evenly?
weaselman

What did you think perfectly might mean other than evenly?

Well, I did not give it too much thought, because it did not make sense, and I thought I guessed what you really meant from the context. What is usually meant by 'perfect' when discussing empirical observations is exactly conforming to the underlying theory.

Casino and Dealer Advantage in Blackjack

In most casino games of blackjack, the house advantage (the dealer advantage) is ~ 8%. The house gets this advantage by the dealer being the last player to act. By acting last, all other players have already made their decisions and could quite possibly bust before the dealer has his turn.

By using correct blackjack basic strategy, you can turn the casino edge in blackjack from 7%-8% down to 0.5%. If you correctly use advanced card counting techniques, you can often change blackjack odds and give yourself the advantage over the casino. Manipulating the house odds to your favor is the reason most casinos don't allow card counters to play blackjack.
